It really grows on you. You can hear in the songs her younger, grungier days (especially in Here's to Never Growing Up) where she was that punk-rock chick we all know and love. But you can also hear her maturity. She's come a long way since she first entered the scene with a tie and baggy pants.
Her voice is still beautiful. The background music still fits the mood of the song. You have your typical fast songs as well as slow songs. Avril's mouth still makes it into the cut with a swear word here and there. It's still Avril. Everything about this album is still her. Only, it's different. It's like a whole knew level. It's mixing her young with her "old." It's just great.
The songs flow. The songs have meaning. She's still inspiring. She's still on top of her game. To be honest, this is probably my favorite Avril album yet (I was always an Under My Skin fan -- maybe it's now a tie for favorite?). It's just so hard to describe! You really do need to list to the entire album before you pass judgement. And don't just listen once and call it a day. Listen to it again. Let everything sink in. Then pass judgement.
I thoroughly enjoy it and I look forward to listening to it all day long.
fascinating hit CD that topped the rock and pop charts in 2013 as she proves time and
again that she is still a premier and influential force in rock and roll, and not since Curt
Cobain had their been a rock icon who dared to challenge the ordinary and maintain a
strong hold on his or her creative immortality. Signed to Epic Records in a successful
effort to make her recording career become more prolific, Avril Lavigne showcases yet
another fascinating and rebellious point of view for the rock star as the album bring on
a set of preppy melodies, aggression, well-written songs and uptempo virtuosity which
made this self-titled hit a success (I would prefer the clean version). Beginning on the
electrifying Top Ten hit Rock ‘N’ Roll, the pulsating track set proceeds with other high-
pitched songs such as Here’s To Never Growing Up (another classic Top Ten hit), 17,
Bitchin’ Summer, Let Me Go, Give You What You Like, Hello Kitty (her quirky homage
to the phenomenal cartoon character), Sippin’ On Sunshine, Falling Fast and the final
track Hush Hush. Although it is not truly considered a masterpiece like Let Go, Under
My Skin, The Best Damn Thing and Goodbye Lullaby, you will find Avril Lavigne to be
an outstanding and well-accomplished stroke of genius played to a great and versatile
tone, whom Lavigne handles extremely well with bold provocation, which this four star
classic will definitely live on as one of her best and most important achievements.
Track by track review:
1. Rock N Roll-The rocking beats and the feel-good have fun lyrics, and making a statement about rock n roll as a visual and a lifestyle (really should not miss the music video either), not to mention the guitar solo which is unexpected and excellent. 11/10
2. Here's To Never Growing Up-a pop-rock anthem that kind of sounds like Nickelback, and considering Avril is now married to Nickelback front man Chad Kroeger, it's not unexpected. She also mentions Radiohead. A party song with lyrics involving staying young and enjoying your life forever. 10/10
3. 17-a song about reminiscing, and who doesn't do that? A lighter, acoustic but fast song that flows well and sounds beautiful. I'll say it; she does it way better than her competition, like say, Taylor Swift (not hating just think this is better). 9/10.
4. Bitchin Summer-a fun song meant to be a summer jam song, hopefully it gets to be the fifth single (we need a fourth prior to summer), with suggestive but playful lyrics, and songs about summer are always fun. How good is it? There is actually a random mid-section with a little bit of rap. If you liked "Nobody's Fool" from the original album, or even thought it was too much, this song will definitely appeal to you. 10/10
5. Let Me Go feat. Chad Kroeger-a powerful ballad with vocals of both Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger. The title speaks for what the song is about, and speaks of remembrance, love, etc. There is some serious beauty in the layered lyrics near the end as well. 11/10
6. Give You What You Like-a slower song with a almost 60's/70's early country sound, or like early Cher almost...really random, background is a little like Lady Gaga's "Teeth." Not great, but different. 7/10.
7. Bad Girl-a darker song featuring some metal vocals from Marilyn Manson, but it's not a duet. The metal crowd that likes female singers should love this song. It's Avril Lavigne with a more metal edge, with Manson-who can ask for more? 10/10
8. Hello Kitty-ok, seriously, this could've been fun, but it is just too goofy. Random yelling, not like it's a story about merch or Hello Kitty...yeah. Pretty much a 0/10.
9. Ain't Seen Nothin Yet-Not a striking song, but keeps with the same themes as other songs, and the love-story going around "you ain't seen nothing yet" shows Avril in love (probably referring to Chad I'd think). Nice to hear the once super-angry girl finding love...hope this one is a keeper after Derek (her ex.) 8/10.
10. Sippin' On Sunshine-two summer jams on one album? While I do not think it's as good as "Bitchin Summer" because it isn't as original and sounds more generic, it's pure fun and energetic. This one tips more off of the "having fun" of the other summer song and more on the relaxation side. So, where it could've came off as filler, it doesn't. 9/10
11. Hello Heartache-The song with the most impressive lyrics by Avril. The strongest vocal content at the beginning and all the way through. The song titles on this album are pretty straight-forward. A very strong song asking questions. 10/10
12. Falling Fast-Hard to really have an opinion around this song, thought the title would mean more, but it was kinda slow, not in a good way. Hard to really have much of an opinion, it's just kinda here, nothing great. 7/10
13. Hush Hush-a calm album closer, sounds like someone else did this song honesty, this comes off like lite or alternative, hardly a bad thing. We do want our artists to try different things and grow. It has strong lyrics about not dwelling on the past, but moving on to a better, brighter future. 9/10.
Though it has better "rocking" songs than most of her albums, I would have to vote this album below her prior "Goodbye Lullaby" effort, but above "The Best Damn Thing" I find "Under My Skin" to be her loudest, rocking album, still with meaningful lyrics, and no filler. In fact, a lot of this reflects the sound of her debut "Let Go," when it isn't being experimental. If Avril can hold onto all her eras while still growing, she will keep having strong album sales even when being slutty seems to prevail in the industry today...
Overall, of course I'd recommend this album. Her doing some collaborations definitely makes for something that is enjoyable.
