OpenMoko Moves Slowly Ahead with 'ASU' Release

The Neo FreeRunner

The Neo FreeRunner phone, which uses the "2007.2" version of the OpenMoko operating system. Although it looks nice, the appplications are extremely few, and rudimentrary to boot. All data entry is done via the 2.8-inch VGA touchscreen. The small arrow at the op brings down a list of apps; we're not entirely sure what the b G1 w S1 stands for. Zhone (Zen Phone) refers to the framework testing image.

Contact List

What we believe to be the phone's contact list, which isn't populated in this demonstration model. The icons at the bottom page back and forth, open an entry, and provide different views of the information.

SMS

Based on the contacts in the previous picture, an SMS can be sent to another user. We're not quite sure why there doesn't seem to be a need for any data (like a message) before this screen pops up.

GPS

Again, an extremely rudimentary GPS service. The GPS radio couldn't locate a signal inside the convention hall, hence the odd numbers.

Phone Keypad

If you have to dial a number manually, this is the pad you'd use.

OpenMoko GTA2

The "GTA02" refers to the type of the motheboard inside. volunteers happlily cracked the phone open so we could get a peek (and pictures) of the inside. How often does any OEM do that? This picture also gives a sense of scale: it only measures 4.75 x 2.44 x 0.73 inches.

Back, Cracked

A closer shot of the back of the OpenMoko NeoRunner, with the SIM card exposed.

Guts

The touchscreen display and GSM radio, tethered by a small cable. Again, note the GTA02_MB_A5 hardware notation at the bottom.

Guts 2

A different shot, which exposes the USB cable to the left, the power connector, and anothr look at the GSM radio.

Tech Specs

Because every geek wants to know what he gets in the box, so to speak.

OpenMoko 2008.8

This is the "next-generation interface, so to speak, which will be formally unveiled on August 8. (Ignore the Neo1973 case it's housed in.) As you can see, there's a few more apps, but nothing too much to speak of.

Improved GPS

In OpenMoko 2008.8, the GPS is improved. This is obviously not a live GPS position. GPS maps will also be contributed from the open source community, so it remains to be seen how that will work out.

Sudoku

These days, you can't help but have a Sudoku app.

The 2008.8 phone interface

Again, not too much to speak of.
